THE ARTWORK

Calming. Meditative. Grounding.

I am drawn to texture and pattern (which explains why I am also a textile and wallpaper designer). I find organic, hand-made patterns with imperfections to be the most interesting. Yet, the organized structures of minimalism and geometry are also compelling. My work combines these themes, contrasting repetition and order against free-flowing, organic pattern.

My works start with paper that I paint with loose, varied, and organic patterns. I deconstruct the painted paper into smaller pieces. I collage these pieces to a wood panel in a structured and rhythmic composition.

Ultimately, by organizing the dynamically painted paper into a rhythmic repetition, the art becomes a meditative and calming space.

I finish many of my pieces with high-gloss resin. This step requires precision and patience to produce the final smooth, glossy effect. The resin creates a heightened sense of dimensionality and vibrance in the work. This slick, structured finish also provides an interesting contrast to the organically painted paper.

BIO

Sarah Schwartz came to the art world in a round-about way, having a background in engineering and law. She realized that an artistic path was much more of her passion. So she trained in textile and wallpaper design. In 2012, she co-founded Sarah + Ruby Design Studio, which specializes in hand-painted wallpaper. Fine art became a natural extension from her wallpaper design exploration.

Sarah’s unique background coalesces in her artwork. Her engineering background asserts itself in the artwork’s structure and composition. Her textile design experience shows in her use of repetition. She uses organic painting techniques developed for her wallpaper designs.

Sarah spent most of her adult life in California. In 2021, she made a cross-country move to New England. Sarah currently lives in Brookline and works in Boston, Massachusetts.
