About the Medium

Straw marquetry is a centuries-old art form in which the stems of grasses like rye or wheat are used to veneer a surface with intricate patterns. Each piece of straw is dyed, then split and flattened into ribbons, which are adhered one at a time to create the desired design. What makes straw so visually compelling is its natural silica content, which causes the surface to catch and shift with light in a way no paint or dye can replicate. The process is labor intensive, often taking weeks to complete a single artwork.

Behind the Scenes

Every piece of straw is carefully split, flattened, and precisely placed by hand. The process requires patience, but the luminous, textured results are always worth it.
